Who Needs an Otoplasty?
A good candidate for an otoplasty is someone who has protuberant ears or deformities or defects of the external ears. Many patients share that overly large, disproportionate ears can result in feelings of discomfort and negative self-esteem.
Otoplasty can be done at any age after your ears have reached full size, usually after age 5 through adulthood. Dr. Crispin prefers to treat patients who are in their teens and older.
What Are My Otoplasty Surgery Options?
Dr. Mark Crispin is sensitive to the discomfort asymmetrical and large ears can cause. He may discuss with you other procedures that can be performed in conjunction with ear surgery to create a completely balanced and symmetrical look.
Incisions are discreetly made behind the ears. The incision location is dependent on the shape and size of your ears as well as the proportions of your other facial features. If the goal is to remove excess cartilage and reshape the remaining cartilage, an incision is placed behind the ear. If only excess skin requires removal, an incision may be made within the natural fold of the ear.
In both instances, permanent stitches will be placed in the natural folds behind your ears to hold them into their new position. These stitches are well hidden and should not be noticeable to anyone but you, nor should they result in any discomfort after the initial healing period.
What Are My Recovery Times After Ear Surgery?
In most cases discomfort will subside within one to two weeks, allowing you to return to work or school. A few days after your treatment, Dr. Crispin will remove your bandages. Your ears may be swollen and red. You may also experience dull throbbing along the incisions. This can easily be dealt with through the use of mild pain medications. During the healing process, it is very important that you do not rub or put pressure on your incisions.
A headband will be required for the first few weeks to help prevent infection and to promote optimal molding of the ears to the head. You may feel more comfortable waiting until this can be removed before resuming normal activities. You can resume any activity that will not impact the ears within the first week but will need to refrain from things that can bend the ears for up to four weeks.

What Can I Expect After Otoplasty?
Your ears may appear smaller and definitely less protuberant, but their actual size is not altered. Otoplasty will not alter the location of your ears, only their size and symmetry. Your hearing will not change. Otoplasty procedures are conducted on the outer ear only.
