What's the Difference Between Tummy Tucks and Liposuction

Consider Liposuction with One of the Best Cosmetic Surgeons in Atlanta

Women and men choose liposuction when bothered by pockets of unwanted fat that resist slimming with diet and exercise. These accumulations of stubborn fat can be permanently removed with liposuction, and the treated areas are recontoured for a naturally slender appearance that can also make you look younger and healthier.

Liposuction is a versatile procedure that can be used to remove excess fat from many parts of the body, including:

Can I Combine Liposuction With Other Procedures?

Liposuction can be performed as part of a fat transfer procedure to remove unwanted fat from one part of the body and transfer it to a part of the body or the face where more volume is desired, such as the cheeks, the area below the eyes, the breasts, or the buttocks.

To produce the best liposuction results, your skin should have the resilience to tighten and smooth over your new contours. Liposuction can be combined with a lift or tuck procedure to create optimal results if your skin is stretched or sagging. Procedures commonly combined with liposuction include:

It’s important to note that liposuction is not intended as a weight loss procedure. Liposuction removes concentrated accumulations of fat from selected areas of the body. The best candidates are close to a healthy body weight and want to remove stubborn pockets of fat that remain unresponsive to diet and exercise.

Are You a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

During your consultation, Dr. Crispin will perform an examination to determine whether you are a good candidate for liposuction. You may be a good candidate for liposuction if you:

If you smoke, you must be able to quit for a period of several weeks before and after your surgery. If your skin does not have the resilience to adjust to your new contours after liposuction, Dr. Crispin may recommend combining liposuction with another procedure to tighten, lift, and smooth your skin and restore your contours.

What Are My Liposuction Surgery Options?

Liposuction consists of making small, discreet incisions, inserting a small hollow tube cannula, and removing the fat. The dislodged fat is then suctioned out. Every effort is made to hide the incisions in a natural skin crease or fold. To break up the fat for removal with liposuction, Dr. Crispin will choose from three surgical options:

SmartLipo—a laser-assisted liposuction technique that warms fat for more efficient removal while also cauterizing blood vessels to reduce swelling and bruising during recovery

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction—a technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to break up fat for optimal removal

Power-assisted liposuction (PAL)—a technique that uses rapid back-and-forth movement of the cannula to break up fat for removal

Each of these liposuction techniques has its advantages in different situations. You and Dr. Crispin will decide on the best surgical option for your desired outcome. Well-informed patients are successful surgery patients. When discussing your options, it is important to understand what liposuction can and cannot achieve.

What Can I Expect During Liposuction Treatment?

Liposuction is performed using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with a sedative, depending on the areas to be treated and the extent of the fat being removed. Dr. Crispin may mark your skin before treatment and use those marks as guides during the procedure. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Crispin will make small incisions to insert the liposuction cannula, then use the cannula to remove excess fat. The procedure usually takes one to three hours, depending on the extent of the procedural plan.

After the procedure is complete, you will be released to go home. You should arrange ahead of time to have a friend or family member drive you home.

What Can I Expect After Liposuction?

Plan time for rest at home for a few days after your surgery. You can expect some discomfort in the days right after your surgery, which can be managed with pain medication. You’ll wear a compression garment for 4 to 6 weeks to minimize swelling and promote healing. Strenuous exercise must be avoided for four weeks after your procedure.

The improvements from your treatment will be visible after a month or two and will continue to improve as residual swelling subsides and tissues settle into their new positions. Final results are visible about six months after treatment.

Atlanta Liposuction - FAQs

Liposuction removes excess fat, while a tummy tuck can reconstruct the muscles and remove excess abdomen skin.

Incisions are tiny, approximately 2mm (think of the size of a pencil eraser).

Dr. Crispin carefully considers the area of treatment, the appearance of this area, and your specific goals to determine the amount necessary for fat removal.

There may be some slight improvement, but exercise and a healthy diet are the best way to control cellulite. The fat that causes cellulite and skin dimpling lies near the skin’s surface. Liposuction removes deeper layers of fat.

As part of your consultation, Dr. Crispin will assess the quality of your skin in the areas being considered for treatment with liposuction. If your skin has sufficient resilience to qualify you as a candidate for liposuction without additional skin tightening treatments, you can be confident that your skin will adjust nicely to your new contours. If your skin does not have sufficient resilience, Dr. Crispin may recommend combining liposuction with another cosmetic procedure.

The fat removed during liposuction does not grow back. However, the remaining fat cells can increase in size with weight gain.

Keeping your weight stable is key to maintaining your new slim, contoured shape. Any substantial weight gain or large fluctuations in weight can permanently affect your liposuction results. Maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly to ensure long-lasting results.

No, however, if you gain significant weight after surgery, other fat cells can increase in size.

Yes. If you are bothered by areas of excess fat and loose, wrinkled, or sagging skin, liposuction can be combined with surgical procedures to tighten, smooth, and lift your skin. Liposuction is often performed in combination with:

Sleeping at an incline with the head and knees elevated is usually the most comfortable.

All exercise should be avoided for 4 weeks

The liposuction procedure is done under anesthesia, so no pain will be experienced during surgery. There will be soreness afterward that is managed with pain medication.
